The Chase was back on ITV this evening (September 9) with another brand new episode of the latest series. But just minutes into the popular prime-time quiz show, social media was hit with an influx of reactions.

Bradley Walsh presented the ITV show as contestants David, Lesley, Sobia and Peter pitted their wits against one of the ruthless Chasers. They worked together as a team in the hope of winning a potential prize pot worth thousands of pounds.

First up was David, a financial analyst, who hoped to use any potential winnings to go travelling to see popular historical spots such as the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.

However, fans at home moaned that the show was not off to the "greatest of starts" as he only managed to secure three correct answers in the cash builder round. During the quick fire round, Bradley asked: "'Developed' is a daily newspaper published in what European capital?"

The contestant confidently replied with the name of a country, saying: "Germany". Bradley corrected him as he responded: "Berlin", leaving the player to have a moment of recognition.

At the end of the round, before finding out that he would be going head-to-head with chaser Paul 'The Sinnerman' Sinha, David shook his head as he admitted: "That Berlin one was a disaster."

Bradley rubbed salt into the wound, replying: "Well that would have only given you another grand anyway. So you got three grand, and it would have given you four." The host then turned empathetic towards the player, as he continued: "Well I thought they were tough questions."

Posting to X (formerly Twitter), one user complained: "Not the greatest of starts.... #TheChase." Another quipped: "Germany is a capital city now?! #TheChase".

Someone else joked: "Ah yes, that well-known European capital - Germany #TheChase," followed by a GIF of Derry Girls character Sister Michael saying: "For fecks sake".

Despite the blunder, David went on to secure £3,000 for the prize pot and a seat in the final Chase.

Speaking about his performance, Paul said: "We don't know a lot about David, other than he probably under performed in that cash builder. We do know that he would love some help in that final Chase."

The Chase airs weekdays from 5pm on ITV and ITVX
