Corrie: Bernie and Summer fear for Paul's life in teaser clip

In a devastating preview of next week's Coronation Street, Paul Foreman's condition deteriorates dramatically.

Devotees of the show are painfully aware that Paul (portrayed by Peter Ash) is living on borrowed time after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year. His health has been in sharp decline over recent months, and medical professionals have warned that his days are numbered.

The heart-wrenching episodes ahead will see Paul's family, including his partner Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and mother Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove), preparing to bid their final farewells.

As Paul's life hangs in the balance, Billy is frantic to cherish every moment left. Yet, the question looms: will he be able to say his goodbyes before Paul is whisked away to hospital while under the care of Bernie and Summer (Harriet Bibby)?

A sneak peek at Monday's episode (September 9) shows Paul's health taking a tragic nosedive, leaving his family in pieces, reports the Liverpool Echo.

With Billy absent from the flat, searching for his lost phone, Bernie and Summer are thrown into turmoil as they sense Paul's life ebbing away.

Summer makes an urgent call to the paramedics, but as Bernie watches Paul gasping for air, she is aghast when Summer informs her that the ambulance won't arrive for another 15 minutes.

"He might not have that long! " Bernie exclaims, just as Paul's brother Kit (Jacob Roberts) enters. A distraught Bernie confides to him: "I think this could be it, he can hardly breathe."

"He was fine the last time we checked. They warned us it might be quick, I can feel him slipping away," she added, her voice betraying the mounting terror as the family descended into chaos.

"Where's Billy? He should be here? ! " exclaimed a frantic Kit, while Bernie attempted to soothe frayed nerves, certain he'd arrive just in the nick of time.

Meanwhile, off-screen, actor Peter faced his own formidable challenge in the plight of his character's MND storyline, confessing to immense pressure to deliver a faithful portrayal. In an exclusive chat with Express and other members of the press, Peter disclosed: "When Ian MacLeod [Coronation Street's boss] first told me I'd be doing this we had no idea of time scale, and also to what point we would take the deterioration of Paul."

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
