Sir Rod Stewart once had a small feud with Gyles Brandreth on the football field. Gyles revealed his connection with the legendary singer during Friday's episode of ITV's This Morning.

The discussion came about after rumours that Rod and wife Penny Lancaster had embarked on a furious row around their living arrangements, forcing the legendary rocker, 79, to put out a statement on social media.

During a chat with Sian Welby, Vanessa Feltz and Craig Doyle on the daytime show, Gyles admitted Sir Rod was far from the friendliest as he admitted they'd once rowed.

"He's a superstar, a global superstar, fabulously rich, but if you meet them, these are real people," Gyles, 76, first said before making a reference to Loose Women panellist Penny.

Gyles continued: "She lives in the real world", before revealing that he'd once played football with Rod Stewart, which led the pair to slightly butt heads due to their different approaches to the game.

"I unfortunately played football with him and he is a real bloke, unfortunately, which I don't think I am on the football pitch. He tackled me, I fell over," he explained. But it hasn't stopped him from remaining a fan of both Rod and Penny.

This comes after Sir Rod took to social media to "put the record straight", after claims that he and Penny were arguing with one another over the future of their marriage. It follows claims there had been a "disagreement" over where the couple should live. However, Sir Rod was adamant that they were happily splitting their time between the UK and their properties abroad.

In a statement shared with his 1.4 million followers on Instagram, Sir Rod said: "We wanted to put the record straight. There is no rift between Penny and I and no disagreement over where we should reside, in fact, it's the opposite. We moved permanently back to our beloved Britain a year ago but are fortunate to also have homes in different countries, which we love to visit."

He added: "Originally we did think it made sense to sell our house in LA, but having spent a wonderful time there this summer with family and friends during my Vegas residency we realised it makes sense to keep our house there. Two of my eldest children still live in Celtic House (The LA residence). Penny and I could not be more in love with each other after 27 glorious years. Please trust me on this... There's no disharmony in our marriage."

This Morning is on ITV weekdays at 10am
