Ranvir Singh reveals her family cried when she was born

Ranvir Singh made a rare and personal family revelation while hosting ITV's Lorraine.

The 47-year-old, who first gained recognition as a political correspondent on Good Morning Britain, discussed being the third daughter in an Indian family and the "upset her birth caused" on Tuesday (August 27).

During a conversation with MasterChef's Jake Quickenden, Ranvir delved into her upbringing. The discussion between the host and Jake revolved around the reality star becoming a father for the third time with his wife Sophie, who recently announced they are expecting their third son.

However, their gender reveal sparked significant backlash online after the expectant mother appeared to express disappointment at the sex of their unborn child. In an Instagram video, the couple, surrounded by their two sons, cut into a cake with a champagne flute, revealing a blue sponge indicating another boy was on the way.

Seemingly disappointed it wasn't a girl, she asked on camera: "Where are all the girls at?" reports the Mirror.

Many of Sophie and Jake's followers were upset with their reaction and criticised them, saying they "should be grateful" they can have children.

Jake defended his wife's reaction but also expressed how "delighted" they were to have another baby on the way. He said: "I am a boy dad so I was always happy but maybe there was a little bit of 'I wish it was a girl' from Sophie."

He commented: "It was never about shopping as some people suggested as she can do that with the two boys, I guess from her part it was more like, being there at the birth of her baby and maybe picking the wedding dress for her."

"I thought it was brave of Soph to admit that maybe she did feel a certain way. It was really brave and people are always going to have opinions," responded Jake.

Nodding in agreement, Ranvir expressed understanding for the couple's dilemma, highlighting that it's something of a "taboo subject" not commonly discussed.

The MasterChef celebrity reassured: "But after 10 seconds of that initial 'where are all the girls at? ' she was like 'omg, it's going to be amazing'."

Coming from an Indian background, Ranvir appreciated the significance attached to newborn gender in her culture. She laid it out: "You know coming from Indian culture everyone wants a boy, it's a big big thing and I'm the third of three sisters."

"So all throughout my childhood I was told by my mum's best friends 'oh when you were born everybody cried, we all cried, everybody was so miserable'," Ranvir added, managing to joke about it.

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV1, from 9am.
