Mastermind viewers were left "howling" with laughter at a major error which might just have cost a contestant his dreams of a big win on the BBC show.

One film was about a child murderer who was burnt alive by vigilantes, only to be reincarnated as a demon, tormenting teenagers in their darkest nightmares. The other was a comparatively innocent legal drama starring Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman as divorcees battling over custody of the children they both love.

However, that didn't stop a Mastermind contestant from confusing the two - a blunder which ended up being his major downfall. "Just walked into the living room to hear some w****r on #Mastermind proclaim that the slasher horror character Freddy Krueger first appeared in the film Kramer Versus Kramer," one astonished viewer took to Twitter to share.

Another mirthfully agreed: "Oh I just howled! The 1984 horror film featuring Freddy Krueger? 'Kramer vs Kramer?' #mastermind." A third mischievously pointed out: "Kramer vs Kramer would have been a *very* different movie with Freddy Krueger in it, and I might have paid to see it..."

"Did he say... Kramer vs Kramer? Absolute legend!" another chimed in to share the joke. One viewer stunned by the news quipped: "Mastermind isn't what it used to be."

Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund) had actually been famous for his starring role in the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror film, which was released in 1984.

The chilling movie, created by Wes Craven, scarcely lost its popularity over the decades as it became a cult classic across multiple generations of children.

It depicted vigilante killers drenching Freddy in gasoline before burning him alive as vengeance for killing a child - but the problems had only just begun.

Instead of tormenting teenagers in real life, he became a demonic presence in the dream realm, equally demonic even after death.

He developed supernatural powers - and if the children he haunted were killed in their sleep, they'd be doomed to die in real life too.

Although one of the contestants might have made a big mistake, some viewers were having better luck at home.

"My 16yr old son getting the Tom Lehrer questions - so that’s what he gets up to in his bedroom!! #Mastermind," quipped one fan of the show.

Meanwhile, quiz host Clive recently revealed how King Charles had let slip that he knew his history as a war reporter.
