Meghan Markle seemed keen to take charge as she gave a passionate speech in Colombia after her arrival in the Latin American country this week - but it has caused fears for her welfare.

She exclaimed: "The most important place that I sit in the world is as a mother... [and] no-one can test the fact that we wanna keep our children safe." Yet on GB News today, it was pointed out that she was visiting one of the most "dangerous countries in the world" - and she was issued a stark warning.

Former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole stated that the British government currently "warns against all but essential travel to certain parts of Colombia". He also suggested: "One wonders whether the President will be manipulating and exploiting their royal presence to add a bit of stardust to his regime."

Left-wing leader Gustavo Petro is reportedly deeply unpopular among residents, just two years into his tenure. After the first year of his presidency, his popularity rating plummetted from 60 per cent to just 30 per cent - and Cole has suggested that he could be using the former British working royals to win favour.

Despite acknowledging that they are likely to benefit from "beautiful" five-star hotels and Presidential Suites, and will not have a typical visitor experience, he warned: "I think I would be advising them of the risks of going to Colombia."

Cole also took a look at the couple's body language during the trip, saying that he thought while Harry was putting on smiles, "he didn't seem to be enjoying it as much as Meghan", who seemed keen to take the lead.

He stated: "[Prince Harry] looks a little bit distant [and] hesitant. Of course he's smiling from time to time, but not necessarily enjoying it as much as she is."

Referring to a moment when she commanded: "Hand!" so her husband could take his hand in hers, Cole added: "It was quite clear who was in charge."

He added: "She's doing everything that she could've done if she'd stayed in the bosom of the royal fam and doing it rather well."

However, Cole was concerned that the pair might "lack the expertise of the Buckingham Palace specialists", who "study" every trip to gauge whether it coincides with British policy.

Without them present - and without trips being vetted via No 10 and the Foreign Office, he feared there was a risk that mistakes could be made.

However, GB News host Stephen Dixon seemed more positive today about the pair's "good message", whereas earlier in the week he'd critically asked what "purpose" the trip served and what they'd thought it could achieve.

Eamonn Holmes also had his say on Meghan this week as he discussed her apparent desire "to be an influencer".
