GMB announce inflation rose above target to 2.2% in July

Richard Madeley made a breaking news announcement during Wednesday's Good Morning Britain. Sitting alongside Trisha Goddard, Richard shared the latest inflation figures with viewers.

As the "breaking news" banner appeared behind the duo, Richard said: "The figures have literally just come in." He went on: "Inflation did go up 2.2 percent last month that's according to official figures published in the last few seconds.

"It's the first rise since December and it's above the Bank of England's target of two percent showing the cost of living crisis is not over yet."

Trisha weighed in: "Meanwhile, a report reveals that the price of cheaper brands of groceries has risen much faster over the last few years than the expensive ones.

"Of course, that has hit lower-income households the hardest."

The dup later cut to Richard Gaisford, who appeared via video link in a corner shop where he explained further about the inflation rates.

He said: "I think over the last few years, Trisha all most all of us would have felt the pressures of inflation on our food and our groceries in shops.

"What we have been seeing is we have been coming down from that historic high of 11.1 percent of inflation to more normal levels.

"But the prices haven't fallen, they're just going up that little bit more slowly."

Richard Gaisford went on to share some examples, explaining pasta has gone up by 39 percent and some low-fat milks have gone up by 49 percent.

The segment sparked a huge reaction on social media with many taking to X to share their thoughts.

"It's not inflation. When companies are making record profits, it's greed," one person fumed.

"Oh no, inflation is expected to go up by 30p in every £100," another commented while a third added: "Wow, what a shock! Inflation goes up, just in time to further squeeze the already struggling working class. Meanwhile, the wealthy elite get to enjoy their tax cuts and rising assets." (sic)

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
