This Morning: Alice Beer shares supermarket savings tips

ITV viewers have ridiculed Alice Beer’s money-saving segment on This Morning. The magazine programme’s consumer editor discussed smart shopping swaps while imploring hosts Rylan Clark and Josie Gibson to forgo purchasing takeaway coffees.

On Monday (August 12), 59-year-old Alice revealed her latest project—a daily staple on This Morning called ‘Save In Seven Days’. The strand will see the expert revealing little-known hacks listeners can employ to save over a thousand pounds per year.

During the first episode, Alice explained to ITV fans how they can embark on the ‘Penny A Day’ event and save themselves £667.96 over the year. The practice sees challengers putting 1p into a pot on the first day, 2p on the second day and so on.

She also revealed that if you cut your £3.50 takeout coffee down, you could save around £182 per year. Moreover, the broadcaster encouraged friends and relatives to ‘share’ memberships and streaming service subscriptions to cut down costs.

Elsewhere Alice discussed how the Cost of Living Crisis has affected our grocery shopping habits. “We’ve all switched to own-label brands in the supermarket,” she began.

“But there are a few stubborn labels we refuse to switch on like the big Coca-Cola’s, the brands we’ve got used to. So let me convince you.”

Alice advised This Morning viewers to switch out £2.25 tubes of Pringles for Aldi’s £1.49 version.

“If you switch to the Aldi version once per week and you pop that tub…Over a year you would save £364. Just from switching one tub.”

While both Rylan, 35, and Josie, 39, were seemingly enamoured by Alice’s money-saving savviness, many disgruntled viewers took to social media to air their views.

One user of X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “Did @_alicebeer just tell us we can save over £300 a year by buying Aldi crisps instead of Pringles once a week?”

“Switching to Lidl or Aldi saves money, no s**t Sherlock,” typed a second.

Someone else commented: “Something about having millionaires sit and listen to us being told to not use so much shampoo and share a monthly Amazon subscription to save money. Yeah okay.”

A fourth penned: “So wait, hang on - she says in one breath people are getting to then end of a week unable to buy food, and in the next her advice is to put incrementally bigger amounts of money (that you don't have) into a piggy bank?!" (Sic)

“I don't eat Pringles, I don't drink coffee, well maybe once a year, I need those extra pennies that are in my account, I don't use a tumble dryer,” remarked another ITV viewer. “Looks like I won't be saving much from the #thismorning segment.”

Tune into This Morning every weekday from 10am on ITV and ITVX.
