University Challenge: Amol chuckles at contestant's answer

University Challenge made its long awaited return to BBC Two on Monday and one contestant left the audience in stitches over his wild guess.

Journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan made his debut as the new host of University Challenge, taking over from Jeremy Paxman. The first episode saw Queen's University Belfast go head-to-head against Liverpool.

During one round, the team from Queen's Belfast had to answer a number of tricky questions about sandwiches made in the United States and they had to name the correct one from the description.

One question was about the Monte Cristo sandwich, which is an egg-dipped ham and cheese sandwich and takes a variation on the classic French croque monsieur.

When it came to answering, team captain Rankin gave a wild guess and said: "Les Miserables?" His answer prompted Amol to burst out laughing, as well as the rest of his panel and the audience.

Amol then corrected him and said: "No, it's Monte Cristo." This made the panel laugh even more as Amol tried to contain his laughter.

One person who watched the show tweeted on X: "What would be in a Les Mis sandwich I wonder #UniversityChallenge."

A second person chimed in: "Les Miserables! Love it. #UniversityChallenge."

At the end of the show, Queen's University Belfast defeated Liverpool with 240 points to 125. Another person reacted online: "Good to see #universitychallenge back on telly. Queen's did very well, 240 is an excellent score."

A second person also commented: "Impressive performance by Queens. Really unfortunate for Liverpool that they came up against such a strong team. #Universitychallenge."

A third also said: "Congratulations Queen’s University - the lucky spud worked! #UniversityChallenge @BBCiPlayer."

University Challenge airs on Mondays on BBC One at 8:30pm.
