All Creatures Great and Small's Nicholas Ralph on animal co-stars

All Creatures Great and Small was given a new lease of life on Channel 5 back in 2020 offering some light-hearted, family-friendly entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic. The first season will now be making its way to Netflix for UK-based fans on August 14.

The latest adaptation follows on from the BBC series which aired in the late 70s, both of which were inspired by the written works of Yorkshire-based vet, Alf Wight. His collection of books was based on his real experiences looking after animals in the countryside.

In the 2020 series, Nicholas Ralph stars as James Herriot, with Rachel Shenton playing Helen Alderson and Samuel West starring as James' boss, Siegfried Farnon. Viewers will know some of the actors had to put on northern accents for their roles.

All Creatures is now in its fifth seasonand for the most part, the camera crews have returned to the same locations each year. Some new hidden gems have been added as the characters' storylines progress.

Here is all you need to know about where the series, in particular the first season, was filmed ahead of its release on Netflix.

The first season was mostly filmed in the Yorkshire Dales in England, in particular Nidderdale, with the village of Grassington being transformed into the fictional village of Darrowby.

In Grassington, the Devonshire Inn pub was transformed into the Drovers Arms, while the interior pub scenes were shot at The Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw.

The village bakery, called Walker's, was used for the Darrowby Cycles building and a private house was used for the exterior shots of veterinary practice, Skeldale House.

The Stripey Badger book store was turned into the greengrocers G F Endleby, while the shoe shop Helen Midgley was used for Handleys Booksellers and the Rustic Rabbit gift store became Higgins Bakers.

The eccentric Mrs Pumphrey's (played by Diana Rigg) home scenes were filmed at Broughton Hall in Craven.

Stars Nicholas and Rachel previously spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and other press about how the locals react when the team arrives to film.

When asked if they often get people coming to the set to watch, Rachel joked: "It is like doing theatre, having a live audience!

"It is lovely, everyone is so lovely, and if it is a nice day they bring their chairs and they sit and watch with an ice cream."
