BBC Breakfast: Carol Kirkwood on whether she would go to space

BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood was forced to shut down her co-star Charlie Stayt as he asked if she would consider going to space.

During Thursday’s episode of the hit show, Charlie, 62, took on hosting duties alongside co-host Naga Munchetty, 49 as they discussed the week's top stories.

They greeted viewers with a segment about the two American astronauts, who are still unable to return home two months after heading off to a test mission to the international space station.

Barry Wilmore, 61 and Sunita Williams, 58 left the Space Station on 5 June and were expected to be back home in a matter of days.

Speaking to viewers, Naga started off by saying: “Two months after blasting off on a test mission to the international space station, two astronauts are still unable to return home after problems with a Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which means that they can’t be brought back to Earth.”

She added: “Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams now might end up spending eight months rather than the originally planned eight days on board the ISS.”

In a pre-recorded clip, BBC’s North American correspondent Peter Bowes revealed that no decision has been made yet on when the astronauts can return back to earth.

Back in the studio, Charlie couldn’t help but ask his fellow co-star if she would ever consider travelling to space if given the opportunity.

Turning to Carol, who was on a screen ready to present the weather, Charlie asked: “My question for Carol this morning is, if you had a ticket available to you now would you go to space?”

It was clear that Carol was not onboard with the idea as she quickly replied: “No. Easy answer.” Charlie asked: “But why not?”

Carol revealed: “I just don’t fancy it and I like being down here on earth thanks Charlie. It just doesn’t appeal to me at all but I like looking at satellites, that’s it.”

Naga jumped in: “I wonder if Charlie was offering you a ticket.” Carol burst out laughing as she added: “Yeah a one way ticket.”

BBC Breakfast is on BBC1 weekdays at 6am
