The Umbrella Academy trailer for the final season on Netflix
The Umbrella Academy season four is on its way but ahead of its release, Netflix subscribers need to know exactly how the third series set up this final outing.
The Umbrella Academy “siblings” were brought together after they were adopted by multimillionaire Reginald Hargreeves (played by Colm Feore) as babies who were born to non-pregnant mothers with no explanation on the same date.
Reginald had intended to use their superpowers to create a vigilante group which didn’t go to plan with the “family” reuniting in their late 20s and early 30s after his death.
They found themselves back in each other’s lives in a bid to try and save the world after Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) accidentally time-jumped into an apocalyptic universe.
The third series saw The Umbrella Academy return to the present day after changing far too much in the 1960s.

When they return to normal times, they see that Reginald, who they met in the past, has adopted seven different children with superpowers and formed The Sparrow Academy.
In this universe, Ben is still alive but isn’t the same kind-hearted person that his family loved.
It is during their time away from their home that Viktor (Elliot Page) comes out as transgender, Diego (David Castaneda) finds out that his ex-girlfriend Lila (Ritu Arya) is pregnant and Klaus (Robert Sheehan) can come back from the dead.
Meanwhile, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is angrily grieving as her daughter Claire doesn’t exist in this timeline and her husband Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood) from the 1960s has died of old age.
But while the Umbrellas and the Sparrows are at loggerheads, they must join forces when they discover the Kugelblitz, a ball of light with the ability to destroy this universe, which grows underneath the Hargreeves mansion.
It is Allison’s rage that catches Reginald’s attention though and recruits her to get the Umbrellas on board with his plan to reset the universe, promising a reunion with her husband and daughter.
The Sparrows had spent years stopping Reginald from going through with this plot by keeping him docile through medication, however, as Klaus gets closer to him, he puts a stop to this, not realising what he has done.
Elsewhere, it is discovered that the Hotel Obsidian contains a portal to the Hotel Oblivion, a machine with the capabilities of resetting the world. Reginald tries to convince the Umbrellas to take action by killing Luther and blaming it on the “guardians of the portal”.
And as the Kugelblitz grows more dangerous, the group jumps from Obsidian into Oblivion with Reginald pushing Klaus out in a cruel move, leaving him to die.
In the season three finale, Luther and Klaus meet in the afterlife with the former encouraging his brother to return to the world and save his siblings from Reginald’s plan.
Five realises the sigil is on the atrium floor but is stopped by a Guardian who tries to overpower him when Klaus comes to the rescue with strength of Luther. Five tells the others to stand on the stars on the floor but Allison is scared when she sees a blue energy binding her siblings together and to the spots where they stand.
Reginald is in the background, working behind the scenes to use this energy to suck the life out of the Umbrellas and when Allison sees what’s happening, she kills him. Then, in an unexpected turn of events, Allison decides to go ahead with the plan anyway and after pushing a large button, the team somehow find themselves in Obsidian Memorial Park.
None of them have their powers but Luther is alive and Allison is seen reunited with her husband Raymond and daughter Claire. It is at this point that the group decides to go their own ways but what is it that will bring them all back together again for the fourth and final series?
The Umbrella Academy season four premieres on Thursday, August 8, on Netflix.
