Clare Balding was joined by her co-presenters Rebecca Adlington and Mark Foster for the Olympics coverage. The broadcaster urged viewers to look away while medals were being handed out to the winners of the women's 200m breaststroke - because the BBC had not yet aired the race.

She began: "The US National Anthem is going out behind us for a race we're going to show you now. The 200m breaststroke final - so don't listen to that!

"It will give away...ah," she paused, as the camera panned directly to the Olympic champion, Kate Douglass. The 22 year old from Pelham, New York, is now a gold medallist.

Clare continued: "Ok... Kate Douglass winning the 200m breaststroke. She did so in front of Tatjana Smith of South Africa and Tes Schouten of The Netherlands."

One eagle-eyed viewer tweeted: "BBC accidentally showing us who won a swimming race before showing us the swimming race is very BBC Olympics," before adding: "Haha awkward."

A second said: "Oops." While a third "It’s the 'Ah!'"

A fourth commented: "I love Claire. God bless her."

"The 'don't listen to that' after already saying it was the USA national anthem and then zooming in on the medalist was brilliant," a fifth commented.

Another remarked: "Clare’s ‘Oh’ was the icing on the cake!"

Elsewhere, Clare was reduced to tears as she bid an emotional farewell to Andy Murray as his career came to an end on Thursday night.

The three-time Grand Slam winner and former World No 1 was beaten in straight sets along with Dan Evans in the Olympic tennis doubles competition by USA's Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz.

Clare said: "My word, hasn't he shown us in the three matches he's played here, everything he is about. It isn't over until it's over.

"And now sadly, in terms of a professional playing career, that is it, it is now over. And all we can say is thank you, thank you."

She was handed a tissue by one of the BBC's production team as she visibly welled up.
