BBC Breakfast studios have been evacuated after a laptop exploded inside the building.

It is understood that firefighters rushed to the studios, located in the heart of Media City in Salford, to tackle a blaze caused by the exploded item. The fire meant live TV was hauled off air as nine fire engines arrived on the scene.

Those working in the building were pictured gathering outside while professionals attempted to deal with the incident. In 2023, for the first time in over a decade, it was announced that BBC Breakfast were planning to revamp their set into a new multi-purpose studio.

Although it was still being broadcast from Salford’s Media City, the set became much larger, with three additional cameras and high-tech graphics.

The BBC brought in the new technology to tell stories in a "creative, bold and imaginative way" and enable "collaboration and sharing across sites".

The corporation said the transformation was a part of their strategy to introduce new studios to be used by multiple departments. It now serves as the broadcasting location for the daily Sportsday programme along with live bulletins on BBC One and BBC News.

Ahead of its debut, presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay expressed their excitement over the new change. Sally, 52, said: "The new studio is a wonderful addition to BBC Breakfast, and I can’t wait to host the first live morning show on the 26th June.

"We have recently celebrated our 40th anniversary and this is a great gift to mark the occasion."

Meanwhile, Jon, 54, added: "Our new studio is state of the art and we couldn’t be more pleased with it. We’re looking forward to bringing the public the same BBC Breakfast they know and love from a fresh new setting."

Earlier in the week, BBC Breakfast underwent yet another shake-up as Sally was missing from the red sofa. The flagship programme, which is usually presented by Sally and Jon from Monday to Wednesday, saw reporter Nina Warhurst take the reins on Wednesday (July 31).

BBC Breakfast failed to mention why Sally was missing from the show. This came just one day after fans were left fuming as Ben Thompson stood in for Jon on Tuesday (July 30).
