Jon Kay was forced to halt regular broadcasting of BBC Breakfast this morning (July 31). The presenter made an announcement as the news of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh being killed broke.

It was reported that the political leader has been killed by an airstrike in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It comes hours after Israel says it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike in the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Jon announced the news as he said: "Developing news this morning as Hamas have announced that its leader, Ismail Haniyeh, has been killed in Iran." The breaking news banner flashed up on screen, marking the importance of the top news story.

The BBC host went to a live link in Jerusalem, with the reporter informing viewers that the leader had been killed in an airstrike. However, it has not "been claimed" by Israel, with them saying that they "do not comment on reports in foreign media".

Haniyeh, 62, was widely considered Hamas's overall leader. According to Hamas, Haniyeh was in Tehran to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was sworn in on Tuesday.

Elsewhere on BBC Breakfast, fans complained as some changes were made today (July 31). The show had not only changed channels, from BBC One to BBC Two, but it was also missing a main feature - the local weather and news.

Taking to social media, fans questioned what had happened and called out Jon for not mentioning it. One user posted to X (formerly Twitter): "If #bbcbreakfast have decided to drop all of there local news bulletins and local weather forecasts, how about mentioning it on the show. @BBCBreakfast @jonkay01."

Due to the Olympics airing on BBC One, scheduling changed half way through the show, swapping to BBC Two at 6:45am.

The BBC news show will see further changes as the week continues. On Wednesday, July 31, BBC Breakfast will start at 6am on BBC One but will only run for 45 minutes before it again switches to BBC Two between 6:45am and 9am.

On Thursday and Friday, BBC Breakfast will move to BBC Two at 8am.

BBC Breakfast isn't the only show impacted by the Olympics coverage, with Morning Live now off air for five weeks, returning on Monday, August 26. Meanwhile, The One Show aired its last programme for a while on Thursday, July 25.
