Doctor Who: The Doctor and Ruby arrive on an abandoned planet

Ncuti Gatwa's tenure as the iconic Time Lord could be in jeopardy as he has not committed to future seasons of Doctor Who.

The star of Sex Education will be appearing in the forthcoming series two of Doctor Who but has remained tight-lipped about his continuity in the role. Meanwhile, Russell T Davies, the showrunner, has stoked speculation by revealing that neither the BBC nor Disney have secured Ncuti for another season.

The bombshell dropped during Comic-Con in San Diego, California, where Russell, Ncuti, and co-star Millie Gibson were promoting the second series. Reports from US media suggest that the storyline leaves an open-ended path for Ncuti's involvement.

The actor shared his experiences of the "pressure" associated with becoming the 15th Doctor, confessing it took him two years to fully grasp the character. He also expressed uncertainty over his participation in a third season.

When pressed for clarity last Friday, Ncuti offered a nervous smile and looked toward Russell, who acknowledged that Ncuti's future in the series remains uncertain. "We've shot season two, but that's only halfway through," Russell explained."We've got all those months of post to come. It's a long way off, so no decisions yet," reports the Mirror.

Ncuti described playing the Doctor as "surreal" and remarked: "Still now, it is a pinch-me moment."

He reflected on his journey, saying: "I am still growing into the Doctor but season two was lovely. It felt like the suit was fully fitted.

"I was finding my feet in season one and having the time of my life but season two felt like a chance to flex the muscles properly."

Should he depart, Ncuti who is slated to star in a West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest later this year will be one of the shortest serving Doctors.

Christopher Eccleston left after his first series in 2005, while Jodie Whittaker the first female Doctor lasted three series and five specials.

So, will Ncuti regenerate into his successor? Only time will tell.

Recently, a new Doctor Who spin-off series was confirmed titled The War Between The Land And The Sea.

The five-part series will see a string of well-known faces including Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jemma Redgrave

A synopdid for the spin-off reads: "When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered.

"With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war."

Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
