The Repair Shop: Guests share sad story behind painting

The Repair Shop expert Dean Westmoreland was left emotional as a guest broke down in tears after seeing her items' big transformation.

During Wednesday’s episode of the beloved BBC show, which first aired in 2022, Angela Rushworth and daughter Eve, from Yorkshire, visited hoping to restore a cherished family possession.

Putting their trust in cobbler Dean, they had brought in a 70-year-old pair of roller skates that belonged to owner Angela's mum until her death in 2019.

After years of use, the skates looked a bit worse for wear but Angela is hoping their restoration will give her father Colin the lift he's been needing.

Speaking about her grandparent, Eve said: “I grew up with my nan, both very big family people, very loving and my nan was the one that brought the family together.”

Jay Blades asked: “So doing this for dad. Will he remember these?” Angela said: “Oh yes. I think at the moment he is struggling looking at photos of mum but I think this will just be a real life for him.”

“So what would you like Dean to do to these,” Jay asked. Angela was fighting back tears as she revealed: “I think it’s for my dad, I think more than anything because he’s older, I would love him to see how they looked originally.”

She added: “Just do your best, I’m not expecting them to look brand-new but just to restore them. My dad being a Yorkshireman said, ‘there's nothing wrong with them.’ It reminds me of my mum and it connects me back with mum.”

Dean got straight to work and attempted to restore the boots. Speaking to the camera he admitted: They are beautifully made but there are quite a few issues. The first thing I noticed was the tear in the toe and the next thing is the eyelets - most of them are missing and the colour’s a bit off but we can restore that.”

Later on in the show Angela and Eve returned to the workroom. Dean asked: “How have you been?” Eve admitted: “Emotional” Angela echoed: “Yeah. Very Emotional.”

As Dean revealed the refurbished roller blades, Angela broke down in tears and said: “I don’t know how you’re done but that’s amazing and they look really lovely.”

She added: “I think they are really authentic. I can see some little bits that were there from before and they look wonderful.” Dean was ‘lost for words’ as he looked at the fair and said: “Thank you.”
