The latest series of Midsomer Murders came to an end on Tuesday night, and it has now been confirmed that another ITV crime drama will fill its slot in the TV schedule.

The latest instalment, titled "A Grain of Truth," centred on a quaint bakery's reopening and a batch of lethal loaves, with DCI John Barnaby (played by Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) on the case.

The episode boasted a stellar guest cast, including Robert Gilbert as Tom Larkton, Rebecca Night as Chrissie Larkton, Jo Martin playing Denise Bantrig, and Paul Chahidi portraying Gabriel Arnson.

Some Midsomer Murders viewers were captivated by the baking intrigue, complete with hallucinations induced by tainted sandwiches, but others were left pondering when the anticipated demise would unfold.

Typically, Midsomer Murders delivers its first fatality within the initial half-hour, yet this time, audiences had to wait a full 36 minutes before witnessing a character's grim fate.

Social media buzzed with comments such as "Midsomer NO Murders" and "35 minutes in and not one murder!"

While another viewer exclaimed on X: "WTF is going on?" alongside quips like "Death by grain", reports the Express.

And while fans will be unhappy that the series has come to an end, according to the TV schedule, an episode of Vera will take its place next Tuesday night.

DCI Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) and her former sidekick Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) will be back on screens with a repeat episode of the ITV series.

Midsomer Murders returns to TV

The synopsis for the episode reads: "DCI Stanhope is called out to the banks of the River Tyne, where the body of a young woman has been washed up.

"Although the victim appears to have been a popular manager at a local green energy company, as well as a loyal friend and a loving mother and wife, Vera uncovers a web of intrigue, betrayal and lost promises as she has to unravel the woman's complicated personal and professional life to find her killer."

Midsomer Murders is available to watch on ITVX.
