Sir David Attenborough is set to delve into the mysteries of the deep blue in his upcoming film venture.

The esteemed 98-year-old presenter will front a National Geographic documentary delving into the current state of the world's oceans. Renowned for his work on BBC documentaries such as Wild Isles and the award-winning Planet Earth series, Sir David continues to captivate audiences with his environmental storytelling.

His latest offering, Mammals, marked his return to docu-series after a two-year hiatus, launching on BBC iPlayer this March. The six-episode journey transports viewers from icy peaks to scorching landscapes, showcasing the resilience of mammals worldwide.

In his forthcoming feature-length special, titled David Attenborough: Ocean, the veteran broadcaster will highlight the urgent challenges our seas face during what he describes as "the great age of ocean discovery".

Reflecting on his experiences, Sir David remarked: "My lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Over the last hundred years, scientists and explorers have revealed remarkable new species, epic migrations and dazzling, complex ecosystems beyond anything I could have imagined as a young man," reports the Manchester Evening News.

He added: "In this film, we share those wonderful discoveries, uncover why our ocean is in such poor health and, perhaps most importantly, show how it can bounce back to life."

The documentary promises to take viewers on a global tour, spanning the Americas to Oceania, illustrating efforts to mitigate the impact of human activity on vital marine environments including coral reefs, mangroves, coastal regions, fish farms, and protected areas.

Tom McDonald, National Geographic's executive vice president of global factual and unscripted content, exclaimed: "There is no-one better to deliver this landmark film than Sir David."

He gushed with admiration for the veteran broadcaster, stating: "I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with him many times over the past decade, and so I am, of course, personally and professionally thrilled that he has agreed to work with National Geographic for the very first time on a subject that is timely and close to his heart."

David Attenborough: Ocean will debut in cinemas in 2025 before premiering on National Geographic and streaming on Disney+.
