Those About to Die cast: Who stars in the Amazon Prime Video series?

Amazon Prime Video viewers are in for a treat as an epic drama set in the corrupt world of the spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition is coming to the streaming service. Landing on the platform on Friday, July 19, Those About to Die has a star-studded cast list playing an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire.

Actors in the new series include two-time Academy Award Winner Anthony Hopkins, who leads the cast to play the Emperor of Rome himself, Emperor Vespasian. Meanwhile, fellow Welsh actor Iwan Rheon plays Tenax, viewers will recognise Iwan for his roles in Game of Thrones, The Defenders, and Misfits.

Tom Hughes, who has starred in The Game, Victoria, and The English, plays Titus, while Death in Paradise actor Sara Martins takes on the role of Cala. Jojo Macari, Moe Hashim, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Rupert Penry-Jones also star.

Those About to Die is created by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) and is inspired by Daniel Mannix’s classic non-fiction book of the same name. Set in Rome in 79 AD, the historical fiction series focuses on the gladiatorial games of Ancient Rome. Here's what you need to know about those starring in the 10-episode series.

Anthony Hopkins as Emperor Vespasian

Welsh actor and Academy Award Winner Anthony plays the Emperor of Rome. In 2021, Antony became the oldest Oscar winner at 83 years old for his role alongside Olivia Coleman in the Father. The accolade was Anthony's second following his 1992 Oscar win for Best Actor in a Leading Role for The Silence of the Lambs.

Viewers will recognise Anthony for a string of roles, more recently he starred in the film The Two Popes, and the popular television series Westworld, which saw him play Dr. Robert Ford. In the 1990s, Anthony starred in movies such as Nixon, Amistad, and The Mask of Zorro.

Iwan Rheon as Tenax

Iwan Rheon plays Tenax, a crime boss in the Roman underworld who runs gambling operations for the gladiatorial games and chariot races. The Wels actor is best known for portraying Ramsay Bolton in the HBO series Game of Thrones, and Simon Bellamy in the E4 series Misfits.

More recently, Iwan has gone back to his Welsh roots, starring in BBC dramas Men up and Wolf, as well as the Welsh speakin series The Light in the Hall. Other roles viewers might recognise Iwan for is The Dirt and Wasteland.

Tom Hughes as Titus

Tom Hughes plays Titus, Vespian's eldest son and the heir to the throne of rome. Tom is well known for his work in historical dramas, including The Game, The English, and Victoria alongside Jenna Coleman where he starred as Albert.

More recently Tom starred in the Apple TV+ series Franklin.

Sara Martins as Cala

Sara Martins plays Cala, a Numidian trader who travels to the Eternal City in an effort to bring her family back together. Most viewers will recognise Sara for her role as Detective Sergeant Camille Bordey in the popular BBC crime drama Death in Paradise.

Sara has played DS Camille since 2011. She is also known for playing Diane Dombres in The Coroner and has starred in films including Little White Lies and Paris, je t'aime.

Jojo Macari as Domitian

Jojo Macari plays Domitian, the younger of Vespasian's two sons. Jojo has starred in a number of big hits in recent years including Netflix's Sex Education and the Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air. Viewers will also recognise Jojo from The Irregulars and the film Morbius, which saw him play Gabriel.

Moe Hashim as Kwame

Moe Hashim plays Kwame, a Numidian fighter who was sold into gladiator life. He is Cala's son. Viewers will recognise Moe for his role as Moe Bumbercatch in the hugely popular Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso.
