David Lammy previews key topics at UK-Europe summit

BBC Breakfast became somewhat heated this morning (July 18) as host Naga Munchetty clashed with guest David Lammy. The Foreign Secretary appeared on the BBC show to speak about migration.

It comes as new Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, will host nearly 50 European leaders at a summit he hopes will begin to reset Britain’s relationship with the continent. Mr Lammy said that migration will be a key issue discussed at Blenheim Palace.

While appearing on the BBC show, he explained that he has visitied Poland, Sweden and Germany and they have all raised the issue of migration. He added: "I may say that they welcome the fact that we have put to bed the Rwanda scheme, which many of them saw as a thwart, really, on wider co-operation."

The MP also touched on his thoughts about politics over in the United States, especially Donald Trump. He was recently quoted as saying that Trump is "not only a woman-hating neo Nazi symapthiser, he's also a threat to the international order... He's also no friend of Britain."

In response, fans said that the show's host, Naga "tore him a new one" as they applauded her line of questioning as she gave him a good grilling over his comments.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote: "@BBCBreakfast fantastic interview was conducted by Naga Munchetty this morning as she tore the secretary of defence, David Lammy, apart over his statements about Donald Trump.

"If Trump does get in power Lammy needn't worry, he's to low on the pecking order for DT to entertain."

Another added: "@BBCBreakfast Shocking lack of composure from David Lammy. First dents in new Govt’s armour. Not a safe Foreign Sec." A third wrote: "Lammy doing the typical mp thing of answering a question with a question #bbcbreakfast."

But not everyone was impressed with the interation between the presenter and the guest. Another social media user posted: "Listen BBC-Labour won the general election-so accept that and start looking for the positives from the new government.

"Naga Munchetty was disrespectful to the Foreign Secretary this morning-not clever BBC! #bbc #BBCBreakfast."

Someone else wrote: "I don’t like Lammy at all, but this line of gotcha questioning from Naga, about Trump, is wearing a bit thin. Asked and answered. #BBCBreakfast".

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
