Kay Burley asks David Lammy to share concrete proposal
David Lammy diverted Sky News presenter Kay Burley's question leaving the broadcaster speechless. The Foreign Secretary was asked what would be different for those living under a Labour government - but the politician said he was unable to announce their "negotiation lines as he would be giving away his hand".
It comes as new Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, will host nearly 50 European leaders at a summit he hopes will begin to reset Britain’s relationship with the continent. Mr Lammy said migration will be a key issue discussed at Blenheim Palace. Speaking on Sky News Breakfast, the Labour MP addressed his plans as Labour's new Foreign Secretary.
Kay asked: "Give me one concrete proposal that will be different under Labour that will impact people in the UK and Europe?"
David replied: "What we have said is that we will have discussions with Europe on the European Commission. We have not got the commission.
"They had elections last month. They won't have a commission in place until December so I'm afraid I can't tell you what our negotiation lines will be and it will be silly to do that because I would be showing our hand.
"What I have said...," he trailed off.
Kay interjected: "I thought we were friends. It's not a card game."
"What we have said is that we want to deal with tackling gangs. That's what we've said," he continued. "I'm not able to tell you what the position will be with Europe because we haven't actually got permission to discuss or negotiate at this time.
She replied: "Oh ok."
Elsewhere, Mr Lammy defended his comments defended calling Donald Trump a neo-Nazi sociopath, saying all politicians had something to say about the former US president "back in the day".
The Tottenham MP, who may now have to work with Mr Trump's administration if the Republican presidential nominee is elected once again in November, was asked if he stands by those comments.
He told Sky News: "You are going to struggle to find any politician who didn't have things to say about Donald Trump back in the day."
"I meet with Republicans and Democrats, many close to Trump, and we will work with whomever the United States choose to put in the White House and become their next president," he said.
He added that he has previously met with Mr Trump's vice presidential nominee, JD Vance, and that they have been able to find "common ground".
