On Tuesday’s instalment of the presenter spoke to British Palestinian MP Layla Moran regarding the Hamas attacks.

During their conversation, the 67-year-old appeared to ask the MP whether or not she knew the Hamas attacks were going to happen beforehand.

When Moran replied by saying she had no indication, fans were left outraged by Richard’s question, with many calling for the host to be sacked from the show.

Following the mass backlash the presenter received, Good Morning Britain has since responded to viewers' complaints.

A spokesperson for the show told Express.co.uk: “Richard is sorry that he has upset viewers with his question to Layla Moran.

“His intention was to understand the mood and atmosphere amongst the civilian population of Gaza immediately before the attacks.

“He asked Layla about her family in Gaza City because she had discussed speaking to them earlier in the interview.

“He did not mean to imply that she or her family might have had any prior knowledge of the attacks.”

Although many were unimpressed by Richard’s question, the MP responded despite looking stunned by it at the time.

She replied: “I think everyone has been surprised by first of all, partly the timing, the sophistication and the way that it's happened.

"What I will say is that I have been warning and others have in Parliament as well for a number of years now.

"That if we don't find a way, you know, people say, 'Go back to the negotiating table', the fact of the matter is, there has not been a table, let alone to go back to the negotiating table for at least 10 years now.

"And this is a cycle of violence and every time there is a cycle of violence, my worry now is that this is radicalising in another generation on all sides, and that we have to stop this hatred."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am
