Major BBC competition show axed after becoming a 'hot mess' as fans react

Survivor: Richard is the first contestant to be voted out

BBC's rebooted reality show, Survivor has been axed after just one series following complaints that the programme was "boring".

Hosted by Masked Singer star Joel Dommett, the show was taken from the hit international franchise which features castaways who must fend for themselves, creating food, water, shelter, and fire, all while battling in challenges to win rewards and immunity to avoid being voted off the island.

After being scrapped by ITV following two series in 2001 and a year later in 2002, the BBC announced a revival last year with a premiere in October. But following the "poor ratings" and the avalanche of complaints from viewers, it seems the series has been dropped yet again.

According to recent reports, BBC chiefs have quietly shelved the survival show, despite opening applications for potential contestants to register their interest for the next series. A TV insider disclosed to the Mail: "It got just the same response as it did back in 2001 and 2002 on ITV - which is that audiences thought it was boring. It's not going into production this year."

This development follows the early closure of the application process in February this year, with an update on the website which read: "As things stand, we are not processing or taking any further applications at this time."

Launching on Saturday 28th October 2023, with its second instalment on Sunday 29th October 2023, Survivor was then shifted into a weekly Saturday and Sunday night slot across eight dramatic weeks.

Boasting the title of the "greatest game on earth", Survivor has since seen over 50 versions produced worldwide. In 2022, the BBC broke the news of their intention to revive the legendary show.

Kate Phillips, Director of Unscripted at the BBC, announced: "Survivor is a global television hit and to be able to bring one of TV's most successful formats to audiences in the UK in a uniquely BBC way is a very exciting prospect indeed."

The BBC painted the upcoming series as 'The ultimate physical and psychological game show that will hook viewers with a gripping test of intellect, strength and deceit as contenders strive to outmanoeuvre, outplay, and outlast each other for the title of the Ultimate Survivor."

But viewers at the time saw things differently. And although many were hooked, others did warm to the 18 contestants involved and labelled the concept a "hot mess".

One viewer fumed at the time: "What a load of s***e #Survivor is #bbc needs a proper overhaul. What sort of show called Survivor has the winner as most liked rather than the best player win it. The winner did nothing the whole time he was there. Don’t waste your time watching this crap like I did."

Last year, Matthew Haywood won a cash prize of £100,000 and the title of Sole Survivor.
