A Place in the Sun: Couple turn down property in Greece

A Place in the Sun presenter Scarlette Douglas was taken aback when a buyer abruptly halted the property search mid-viewing.

In Wednesday's instalment of the popular Channel 4 programme, Scarlette was tasked with finding the ideal holiday home in Paphos, located on Cyprus' western coast, for Scottish pair Linda and Jim.

With Jim unable to make the trip, Linda enlisted her sister Marie to assist in making the decision. Armed with a budget of £80,000, the pair were on the hunt for a one or two-bedroom property close to bars, restaurants and the beach.

Linda also had her heart set on some outdoor space and a pool for her children.

The search got off to a rocky start as the first property failed to impress Linda. The one-bedroom flat boasted an open plan kitchen, double bedroom and a shower room, reports the Mirror.

Linda was not fond of the exterior as it was adjacent to a construction site. For the second viewing, Scarlette pulled out all the stops, presenting Linda with a flat that featured a communal pool.

However, she disclosed that it exceeded their budget, being listed at £96,000, but this didn't deter her from exploring the interior of the flat.

It was the third property that piqued Linda's interest. Scarlette revealed: "The property we are actually going to look at is a townhouse.The property had sea views, a bright and open living room, a kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom."

The property featured sea views, a spacious, luminous lounge, well-appointed kitchen, two comfy bedrooms, and a modern bathroom. Linda was absolutely taken, exclaiming: "Well done Scarlette. It's beautiful, it really blew us away and is just stunning. It's everything I was looking for. Honestly, it's just amazing and you've excelled yourself."

Scarlette probed further with Linda: "Is this the number one property and the one to beat? Where do I go from here now? How can I improve on this place?"

It appeared Linda was completely enamoured with the property as she confessed: "I don't know, I don't know if I even want to see anything else. Let's just stop, I don't know how you can improve."

Following the initial euphoria, Linda nevertheless proceeded to inspect two additional properties alongside Scarlette but seemed to remain infatuated with the third.

In the midst of other potential options, Linda conceded: "I think my mind is made up in all honesty, this is a great option, but in my heart of hearts, it's the townhouse I want."

On further reflection, Linda declared: "I think if I am honest with myself I made my mind up at the townhouse. When I went in I just fell in love with it."

Ultimately, an offer of £75,000 was made for the coveted townhouse by Linda which was rejected. However, despite initially wanting an apartment, they struck a deal for the property at £76,000.

Viewers were quick to react, with many suggesting Linda's initial budget was perhaps too meagre for her lofty aspirations.

One user remarked on Twitter: "I'll make a prediction here... Expectation and budget mismatch. #aplaceinthesun."

Another followed with the observation: "£80,000 budget and expecting a view of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon."

Subsequently, another chimed in saying: "After seeing one property they decide they want one which costs £50,000 more than they can afford."

On a concluding note, a different viewer commented: "In the budget but add on 10k for furniture, appliances etc etc even at IKEA prices... #aplaceinthesun."
