Tony Blackburn addresses future in radio as he celebrates 60 years on air

Tony Blackburn speaks about his future in radio

On Thursday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, hostess Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh spoke to BBC icon Tony Blackburn.

The 81-year-old was celebrating 60 years on the radio as he detailed what’s next in store for him. As the interview drew to a close, Richard commented: “You say you’re going to carry on as long as Cliff Richard carries on?”

Replying, Tony laughed as he said: “Well, I don’t want to go on- I only want to go on when I think I’m doing it all right. But, I’m not going to embarrass anybody by going on.”

Complimenting the radio star, Richard told the guest he was still as good as he was 60 years ago. Speaking about his long-running career, Tony confessed it doesn’t seem like all that time has passed since he began at the age of 21.

He said: “I’m very lucky, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I loved the pirate ships. I thought they were great. To finish off after all this time touring with a Sound of the 60s theatre show and being on Radio Two after all these years, it’s just amazing.”

During the interview, Tony was quick to call out the ITV host after he touched on his age.

Richard said: “Occasionally at the weekend and I’m spinning through the dial of my radio and I catch you, it usually takes me three or four sentences listening to you, to realise that it’s you.

“Obviously you have a very distinctive voice, you sound so damn young!”

Poking fun at the presenter, Tony replied: “And would you like to say look at it as well?”

The trio burst into laughter as Richard continued his point that Tony has a youthful voice when broadcasting.

He replied: “It’s been a natural thing really, I enjoy what I’m doing and I’m literally enjoying the progress because every music I’m choosing it myself, I’m not playing anything I don’t like, that’s the great thing about it."

It wasn’t long before viewers praised Tony for his appearance on the ITV show, with many congratulating his huge milestone.

One person said: “Amazing achievement Tony. Great interview on GMB, looking forward to you on the Radio today with Gary Davies and Jeremy Vine. You still sound as young as when you first started. Enjoy the celebrations.”
