Marcus Rashford could copy Jadon Sancho's Manchester United escape route after Borussia Dortmund entered the race for his signature this month, according to reports.

Three European heavyweights are said to be in the running to sign the wantaway forward, while he could also have options closer to home.

The situation surrounding Rashford's future at Old Trafford is heating up as the January transfer window progresses, with a host of suitors starting to circle.

Ruben Amorim left the 27-year-old out of his matchday squad for the fifth time in six games, citing illness as the reason for his latest omission.

Rashford hasn't played for United since being hauled off in the 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen on December 12, and it looks increasingly likely he won't feature for his boyhood club again.

He could take the same route out of the Red Devils as his close friend Sancho, who returned to Dortmund on loan for the second half of last season after his public fall-out with Erik ten Hag.

According to The Athletic, the Bundesliga giants have joined the race to sign Rashford on an initial loan this month.

It's claimed that Serie A duo AC Milan and Juventus are also in the frame, while there is also interest in a short-term deal in the Premier League.

The report adds that Rashford could yet stay at United until the summer despite publicly admitting he was "ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

Interest in his services is said to be building, and talks about his options are ongoing, but no decision has been made on the England international's next destination.

Rashford's eye-watering £325,000-per-week salary, part of the new contract until 2028, which he signed in 2023, could prove to be a significant hurdle.

United would want most of his wages covered, but whether any of his realistic next clubs can afford them remains to be seen.

Rashford won't rush his decision. He will want to land somewhere that offers an opportunity to reclaim his spot in the England squad under Thomas Tuchel.

The United No. 10 needs a platform to convince Gareth Southgate's successor to take him to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Therefore, while there is reported interest in Saudi Arabia and the MLS, Rashford is widely expected to remain in Europe.

Amorim has suggested that there is a pathway back into his plans if Rashford improves his attitude and application in training.

But it would be a surprise if the hometown hero hadn't moved on to new pastures by the time February rolls around.
