The Premier League have released a statement after a controversial penalty was awarded in Ipswich Town's favour in their match against Chelsea on Monday night.
The Tractor Boys took the lead when Liam Delap stepped up from the spot to beat Filip Jorgensen from 12 yards.
However, there was some debate as to whether the penalty should have been awarded in the first place after John Brooks' divisive on-field call.
Delap sprinted through on goal and Jorgensen came sprinting off his line to smother the ball. The Dane missed the ball and Delap purportedly went flying over, convincing Brooks to point to the spot.
But replays appeared to show Delap losing his balance and throwing himself over Jorgensen, with very little contact between the pair.
Despite that, the on-field decision stood after a swift VAR review and Delap made no mistake in dispatching the penalty.
The Premier League have released a statement to clarify why the decision stood, despite Chelsea's protests.
The statement read: "The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Jorgensen on Delap was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty."
Chelsea may be aggrieved about the decision and how little time was taken to analyse the penalty incident. VAR incidents will be only be overturned if there is a 'clear and obvious' error made by the officials.
To make matters worse for Enzo Maresca's side, VAR would deny them again when Joao Felix thought he had equalised in the first half.
The Portuguese prodded home from a Cole Palmer cross and looked across to the assistant referee, who kept their flag down.
But replays showed the forward had moved a fraction too early when Palmer sent in the cross and VAR had no option but to disallow the goal.
Chelsea knew that victory would see them finish 2024 in second position as Arsenal do not play until New Year's Day. But Maresca's men would need a spirited effort to take all three points away from Portman Road after falling behind.
