Former Newcastle defender Michael Newberry has tragically passed away at the age of 27, his current team Cliftonville have confirmed.
The unexpected death of Newberry, who joined the Belfast outfit in the summer, has sent shockwaves through the country's football leagues.
He had previously enjoyed a triumphant three-year tenure with Linfield, clinching two Irish Premiership titles.
Following the sad news, both Cliftonville and Linfield have postponed their fixtures against Dungannon Swifts and Larne respectively.
Cliftonville released a sombre statement saying: "Our condolences are extended to Michael's family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news. Rest in peace, Newbs."
Linfield also expressed deep sorrow, saying: "Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.
"Linfield has agreed with NIFL that tonight's Premiership game against Larne should be postponed. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael's family and friends at this very sad time."
Acknowledging the loss, a NI Football League spokesman said: "Everyone connected with the NI Football League pass on our heartfelt condolences to Michael's family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time."
Newberry had represented Northern Ireland at the Under-21 level and also played for Vikingur Olafsvik in Iceland during 2018.
Formerly hailed as one of Newcastle's sparkling youth prospects, he clinched the 'Wor Jackie trophy' in 2016, recognising his impressive talent at just 11 years old.
