Sheffield United fans were able to celebrate with some familiar faces last night after their side’s derby win at Bramall Lane. The Blades went level with Championship leaders Sunderland thanks to Tyrese Campbell’s 50th minute winner against Sheffield Wednesday, the standout moment in an otherwise uneventful clash.

Not that manager Chris Wilder or celebrity fan Joe Root were bothered about the nature of the performance though, with the pair both then hitting the local pub to celebrate.

In video footage posted online, Wilder is seen standing on his chair leading the celebrations by singing and chanting fan songs.

Root is also close by, pumping his first in the air and himself signing along. England’s most prolific Test match batsman had earlier been among the 31,127 spectators to have seen his side notch a fourth straight league win.

Wilder’s passionate celebrations were in-keeping with his behaviour at the final whistle. The 57-year-old ran down the touchline and let out a huge roar when the win was confirmed, before gesturing towards the home fans.

And on Sky Sports, the live commentary summarised the emotion of the moment, with Gary Weaver saying: “Sheffield United have got the freedom of this city. Sheffield Wednesday fans will go into hiding while they get over this. United are the kings of the Steel City and Wednesday will fell the pain.”

Sky has slashed the price of its Sky Sports, Sky Stream, Sky TV and Netflix bundle in an unbeatable new deal that saves £216 and includes 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

With Ultra HD included at no extra cost, football fans can enjoy the 2024/25 season with crystal clear picture quality.

Wilder is in his second stint in charge of the club, having led them to the Premier League in his first spell. He left by mutual consent in March 2021 with his side facing top-flight relegation, but after taking over at Watford and then Middlesbrough, he returned last December following the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom.

He’s long been lauded for his willingness to embrace the fans, and as well as his own singing, was serenaded by supporters in the pub. They sang ‘Chrissy Wilder, he’s one of our own’ in reference to his Yorkshire upbringing.

Root, 33, has also been regularly seen at United games when his cricket schedule allows. Sunday would have represented his last chance to go to a Championship game for some considerable time, given he’s been named in the England squad to tour New Zealand later this month.

His love of football has often led to jovial jibes from another ex-England captain, Michael Vaughan. A famous Owls fan, Vaughan was notably silent about football on his social media on Sunday evening, despite regularly commenting on his  team.

The Blades are now second, only behind Sunderland on goal difference and two points clear of Leeds in third. Wednesday are 18th and remain just three points clear of relegation.
