Ruud van Nistelrooy has confessed that he wouldn't have accepted an assistant role at any other club except for Manchester United - and says he's ready to stay as No.2 under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The United legend - who netted 150 goals in 219 matches during his five seasons with United before departing in 2006 - was the head coach at PSV Eindhoven before resigning after a single season where he clinched the Dutch Cup.

His return to Old Trafford as one of Erik ten Hag's deputies in the summer took many by surprise.

Currently, as interim manager, he's holding the fort for the soon-to-be new boss Amorim.

The Dutchman said: "Obviously, I think this would be the only job I would take as an assistant, because of the whole thing with United, being here at the club.

"For me it was important to get a feel how it goes over the next two years and then make a decision. To decide 'is this something that fulfils me in my job.'

"And I have to say that for the moment, this far I have really enjoyed the role as an assistant.

"Obviously the decision to make for Man United was a big one - that's why I am in the role and why I can commit to being an assistant manager.

"And I did it with great pride and have really enjoyed it - and I will enjoy it again after this. Then, after two years, I will have to see how things go."

Van Nistelrooy, 48, is keen to continue working under Amorim and hopes to remain part of the new management team.

He added: "Obviously it can change, we all know that. But I am not thinking in that way - I am not here to prove myself in that way, but to help and to do the best I can.

"The club is the most important thing so let's do the best we can to get a result against Chelsea. That's my focus none of the other things are in my mind."
