It seems that Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo isn’t one to take the FPL game too seriously despite being a revelation this season. The Cameroon international has six goals in seven Premier League games, and has become renowned for striking early in the games.

Back in September, the Bees suffered back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Tottenham, but in both matches Mbeumo scored inside the opening minute.

And his displays led to him being nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award.

It means Manchester United’s leaky defence will need to be on their guard in the early stages at Old Trafford today. Mbeumo will be out to exploit the home side’s recent uncertainty at the back, and has likened his blistering starts to a game of chess.

Asked about his knack of early goals, he compared them “to the checkmate in three moves. I think you need to surprise, try to make them not know how you’re going to attack. I think you need a bit of luck as well.”

Those who picked Mbeumo in their FPL teams from the start this season have struck solid gold. And ironically, his goals are worth more than that of a normal striker. The game lists him as a midfielder given he’s previously been deployed on the wing.

Mbeumo is said to be ‘astonished’ at this development, but also revealed that he receives ample hate messages from users on social media when he does miss a chance. However, he claims to simply laugh off any abuse.

The 20-cap international has proved popular with Brentford fans, especially given the way he has seamlessly taken responsibility for penalties following the departure of Ivan Toney. The England international left the club in a big-money move to Al-Ahli last month.

Like his predecessor, Mbeumo adopts a no-look technique, and more often than not with success. In the last game before the international break, he fired home from the spot against Wolves in a dramatic 5-3 win for his side.

Manager Thomas Frank will not only be desperate for his key man to fire against United today, but also for his team to banish their last experience at Old Trafford. A year ago, they led 1-0 deep into injury time having dominated for much of the afternoon.

But home sub Scott McTominay scored twice at the death to leave Frank and co stunned. The Bees got a measure of revenge at home with more late drama, Kristoffer Ajer knocking home a 99th-minute leveller.
