The transfer window might’ve slammed shut last month, but Manchester United can still add to their squad following a dismal start to the campaign.

There are no time constraints on when deals for free agents can be penned, with Erik ten Hag’s side reportedly in talks with one player about a potential move.

Ahead of club football’s return this weekend, Express Sport have detailed six free agents who could still be of use to clubs in Europe this season.

Adrien Rabiot

It probably wouldn’t have been in Adrien Rabiot’s plan to be without a club this long after leaving Juventus in the summer, but alas, the Frenchman is still a free agent.

There has been movement on the transfer front though, with United one of several clubs rumoured to be in negotiations with the midfielder.

And given the issues Ten Hag has faced in midfield this season already, it wouldn’t be a shock to see United make a return for the long-time transfer target.

Anthony Martial

From one potential United signing to a player who’s just left the club.

Anthony Martial’s time as a Red Devil somewhat petered out in the end, with the attacker managing just 19 appearances in his final season at Old Trafford.

But at 28 years old, Martial still has life left in him and could offer a decent-level side in Europe an exciting attacking option as a free agent.

Joel Matip

A serial winner in his time with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, Joel Matip, for some, made up one of the Premier League’s best-ever centre-back duos.

Imperious next to Virgil Van Dijk during the halcyon days under Klopp, Matip followed the German out of the door when he left the Merseyside outfit this summer.

But with the season having already got underway, the 33-year-old is still searching for his next home and has been linked to West Ham.

Serge Aurier

It’s been three years since Serge Aurier left Tottenham Hotspur with the right-back having played for three different clubs since.

Spells with Villarreal and Nottingham Forest followed his departure from Spurs before Aurier spent the second half of last season with Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Now in his thirties, Aurier might have to instead settle for one of the continent’s less glamorous teams if he wishes to rekindle his playing career.

Sergio Ramos

Yes, the four-time Champions League winner and legendary Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos is a free agent.

Having left Paris Saint-Germain last year, Ramos agreed a move to boyhood club Sevilla, where he featured 37 times across all competitions.

The Spaniard wasn’t kept on for the 2024/25 season though, meaning Ramos is currently out of work and looking for a new club.

Miralem Pjanic

One of Europe’s best midfielders during the mid-2010s, four-time Serie A winner Miralem Pjanic enjoyed a trophy-laden time with Italian side Juventus.

A move to Barcelona stunted his career somewhat, with stints in Turkey and the UAE having followed since.

At 34 years old, Pjanic might’ve passed his prime, but the Bosnian could still have one last rodeo in his legs before retirement.

Other notable free agents

Davy Klaassen

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

Grzegorz Krychowiak

Rafinha

Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Isaac Success

Ivan Perisic
