Gary Lineker has tipped Frank Lampard to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager previously.

Lee Carsley has impressed since being named as interim manager of the Three Lions, leaning on a host of young players who he worked with previously to ensure that his audition has gone to plan. England cruised to a 2-0 victory against Ireland over the weekend before replicating that scoreline against Finland on Tuesday night.

However, the FA have ‘left the door open’ in their search for a new England boss, claim The Telegraph. Carsley is said to be under consideration, as well as ex-Chelsea player and boss Lampard.

The former Derby boss has been out of work since his stint as interim Chelsea manager at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, having been sacked by Everton in the months prior to his appointment.

But Match of the Day host Lineker has given Lampard a glowing reference previously after sharing the studio with him for the BBC’s coverage of Euro 2024.

Speaking on his The Rest is Football podcast, he said: “This will be Gareth Southgate’s last tournament, I think, whatever happens. If he wins, I think he’ll absolutely bow out.

“And if he doesn’t then I think he’ll bow out. It’ll be his decision. But I wouldn’t disregard Frank Lampard. I think he tactically gets it. I think the players will respect him immediately. I’m getting ahead of things here.

“If you’re going to go English, you go, like, who else? Eddie Howe? Eddie Howe, possibly? I think he’s been a bit unlucky in his managerial career in some ways. I think he gets it tactically.”

Carsley remains in the frame for the full-time position, though the FA are reportedly keen to explore several options, including Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Lampard. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is said to remain a ‘dream appointment’ as well.

Lampard will be hoping that his tactical analysis over the summer will put him in a strong position to remain under consideration as the FA continue through their appointment process, having given a good account of himself during his first stint at Chelsea and at Derby.

Though Carsley’s six matches in charge will put him in pole position to land the role if he can continue to impress, having already appeared to have won over the support of the dressing room.
