Jermaine Jenas was keen to succeed Gary Lineker on Match of the Day prior to his recent BBC exit.

The former England international has been sacked by BBC after an internal investigation was launched into the ex-midfielder following complaints about ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Jenas has gradually been removed from the BBC’s official channels, recently not featuring on Match of the Day or the One Show. He has also been removed from a mural outside of Media City HQ in Manchester.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting line up.”

Jenas last featured on Match of the Day on 4 May, and that may be the last time that the 41-year-old is seen on the show despite being widely regarded as the likeliest pundit to take the reins of the iconic programme.

The former Tottenham playmaker has even spoken openly about how he would be ‘up for’ hosting the show previously, despite Lineker showing no signs of standing down from his duties.

He told the Daily Mail: “I would obviously be up for it… it's Match of the Day and it would be a great opportunity.

"I haven't thought that far ahead but I hosted Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night, which was the first one I've ever done. I loved it, it felt comfortable to me, it felt normal, and I love doing The One Show as well.

“I feel quite blessed that I'm even in people's minds that it's something I could take on given how big the show actually is.

"Gary has got plenty of legs in him and I don't see him going anywhere soon but when that day comes which it will do, I would like to think that I am at least thought about to fill the position. If that is the case then I would obviously jump at it."

Last year, Jenas joined Lineker on MOTD and when providing analysis for Everton's 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace, explained: "I always like the striker's opinion."

The host, who gave his verdict on a penalty incident, then jokingly replied: "You want this job?"

His response brought the studio into tears laughing, before Jenas then curiously hit back: "No, no, not yet."

Only for Lineker to make his prediction, telling viewers "later" in a potential nod to his successor.
