Lee Carsley is poised to step in as England's interim manager for their Nations League matches in September.

The Football Association (FA) are currently seeking a replacement for Gareth Southgate, who left his post following England's loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Several potential successors, including Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, have been linked with the role since Southgate's departure.

Howe continues to manage Newcastle United, while former Chelsea boss Potter remains unemployed.

However, the FA has yet to agree on the ideal candidate to lead the Three Lions into the future, leaving Under 21s manager Carsley to temporarily take the reins.

England will face off against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in Nations League matches in September. As initially reported by The Telegraph, Carsley is expected to be asked to manage the senior team - a position that would pit him against the country he represented 40 times during his playing career.

Carsley has held the position of Under-21s manager since 2021, having first joined the FA system in 2020 as under-20s head coach before earning a promotion.

Last summer, he guided the under-21s to victory in the Euros with a squad that included senior stars Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer. Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, one of Carsley's former players, has already expressed his support for Carsley's appointment.

The midfielder expressed his full confidence in the coach, stating: "Absolutely. Lee is an unbelievable manager and an unbelievable guy. He is ready to step up. There have been a lot of big clubs sniffing around him and that is credit to himself and his coaching."

He added: "Whenever I step on the pitch for England I just have freedom to enjoy my football. I feel like he is ready. They are conversations for them (at the FA)."

While Carsley is seen as a top contender to take over the England role temporarily, FA chiefs are yet to decide on a permanent appointment. After the September internationals, England will face Greece and Finland again in October's Nations League games.

The year concludes with rematches against Greece and Ireland in November, before focus shifts to 2025 and the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup.
