Coronation Street fans are convinced they've figured out the next proprietor of the Chariot Square hotel amid rumours that Debbie Webster is to meet a tragic end.

Debbie, portrayed by Sue Devaney since her first appearance in 1984 as Kevin's sister (played by Michael Le Vell), left in 1985 but made a comeback in 2019.

Taking over the Chariot Square hotel a few years back, Debbie has won over viewers' hearts. Yet, whispers this week suggest her character might face a fatal exit.

Insiders claim Sue Devaney will give a heart-wrenching performance as Debbie grapples with an upcoming dementia diagnosis. The storyline, set to unfold in 2025, is expected to be "long-running" and "promises to be heartbreaking".

A source disclosed to Metro: "It's one of the show's biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline."

Speculation is rife among fans about who will take over the reins at the Chariot Square after Debbie's departure.

On a Corrie fan page on Facebook, speculation abounds, with one user pondering, "Who will run the Chariot Square when she's gone? " Another suggested, "Maybe Carla will buy it, she has an expanding property empire.", reports Plymouth Live.

Meanwhile, some fans believe a returning soap icon could be in line to take charge.

"Rosie! Which ties in her return," exclaimed an eager fan. Another enthusiast wrote: "I can see this happening! " while yet another added: "Hoping that this storyline with Debbie leads to a Webster revival with Rosie and Sophie."

Rosie, portrayed by Helen Flanagan, first graced the Coronation Street scene in 2000 as the young, defiant daughter of Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Kevin (Michael Le Vell).

In 2012, Helen Flanagan decided to exit the show to explore new acting ventures. She made a comeback in 2017 but took leave again in 2018 for the birth of her daughter Delilah, and has been off-screen since then.

Coronation Street is on ITV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and available to stream from 7am on ITVX
