Scavengers Reign season two teased in concept trailer
Netflix enthusiasts have been left in the lurch as yet another promising series is chopped after its inaugural season.
Adding to this year's string of abrupt cancellations by Netflix, fans are incensed, particularly over fan-favourite fantasy hits like Kaos and Dead Boy Detectives.
The sci-fi adventure Scavengers Reign initially debuted to rave reviews on HBO Max in October 2023, and it wasn't until its Netflix release in May that it fully captured audience adoration.
Charting the thrilling journey of marooned space adventurers on a planet brimming with wondrous flora and deadly fauna, the show captured imaginations but missed the mark on sustaining necessary viewership numbers for renewal on either service, even with a pristine 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating.
The show's creator, Joe Bennett, delivered the unfortunate news alongside a sneak peek at the never-to-be-realised season two, prompting a storm of dismay among the loyal fans in an Instagram announcement, reports the Mirror.
One aggrieved fan let loose: "You are KIDDING ME?!
"SR was the most beautiful and interesting thing on TV since maybe ever! It blows my mind that it wasn't immediately given several more seasons."
Another disheartened viewer lamented: "No season 2 of this yet [they're] wanting a 5th season of Emily in Paris," and queried despondently, "You got a Patreon?"
Chiming in with the discontent, another added: "This is such a waste, when profit plays against quality shows like this one."
"This is so important for me, I've never seen anything like it and we need more of it.
The explosive reveal by Bennett set off a significant recoil amongst Netflix subscribers on Reddit, with a disheartened user stating, "It's really heartbreaking that such a uniquely beautiful show might not find a new home for season 2."
Voicing regret, another admirer of the series commented, "Too bad. One of the most imaginative - and horrifying - animated shows I had seen in years."
While another enthusiast shared their deep disillusionment: "Life is unfair. Maybe my favourite season of television ever. Just a wonder."
In response to the cancellation, numerous fans have been voicing their wishes for competing platforms such as Apple TV+ to take over and deliver a second season, while others ponder over the prospect of a fan-funded sequel releasing directly on YouTube.
The words of the creator may provide a glimmer of hope for devotees longing for the return of the Scavengers Reign narrative.
In an earnest reflection of the struggle faced thus far, he disclosed, "We've had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season last year."
He then went on to kindle anticipation among fervent followers: "But this is not the end. There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season, and we produced in-house at Green Street a teaser for what was going to come in the second season."
Concluding with gratitude, he expressed, "Thanks again to everyone who watched and supported the show."
Scavengers Reign is available to stream on Max in the US and Netflix in the UK.
