Outer Banks season four teased in Netflix trailer
Outer Banks enthusiasts were over the moon this week as Netflix officially greenlit the beloved series for a fifth season.
Yet, there's a tinge of sadness in the air, as the streaming giant also announced that this upcoming season will be the show's swan song.
The smash-hit teen drama, which chronicles the escapades of a group of teenagers known as the Pogues on their quest for treasure along North Carolina's coastline, is set to take viewers to Morocco for the latter half of its fourth season, dropping this week.
Amidst their thrilling exploits, they frequently butt heads with their affluent adversaries, the Kooks, and uncover startling truths about who they are and the enigmatic histories of their families.
Starring Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline as the intrepid John B Routledge and Sarah Cameron, it's highly anticipated that the duo will return for one final, epic treasure-hunting journey around the globe, reports the Mirror.
While fans were ecstatic about the renewal, the sentiment was mixed, as they also acknowledged the "bittersweet" reality of bidding farewell to the cherished characters.
"Kind of bittersweet," a Reddit user shared. "Really happy we are getting another season but also sad it's the final. Was really hoping for 6 seasons."
Another devotee commented: "One of the longest running new gen teen shows. The end of an era."
"I'm gonna miss this show idgaf if season 5 probably hasnt even started production yet," confessed another.
A particularly dismayed fan blurted out: "FINAL?????? WHAT IS THIS NEWS?? did the creators not just say a few months ago that they wanted seasons 4, 5 and 6(?!!) to be a separate trilogy."
"It makes sense but I'm sad it's ending," lamented one fan, adding optimistically, "5 seasons is a good run though."
Another disheartened viewer simply stated: "No one talk to me, I'm sick."
In light of the show's conclusion, Outer Banks' co-creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke reached out to their audience with a heartfelt letter, reassuring them that the fifth season will deliver a gratifying finale.
"It seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away," they expressed in their message.
They promised fans that "[Season five will] bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago... We hope you'll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break."
Moreover, the creators have announced that the second part of season four will culminate in an extended feature-length finale, ensuring that there's a substantial amount of Outer Banks excitement remaining before the final curtain call.
Outer Banks season 4, part 2 releases Thursday, November 7 on Netflix.
