Grey's Anatomy teaser for season 21

Grey's Anatomy may have seen a dip in viewership over the years, but the introduction of a popular new cast member could provide a much-needed rejuvenation for the ABC medical drama.

Deadline has verified that Sophia Bush, renowned for her role in One Tree Hill, will be joining the ensemble as a trauma surgeon in a recurring capacity.

Her impending debut in the ongoing 21st season of Grey's Anatomy comes following the departure of two key characters, Mika Yasuda (played by Midori Francis) and Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), expected to exit within the next year.

Despite once being a regular feature in the top ten most-viewed shows in the US, ratings have taken a hit in the 2020s, although season 20 still managed to attract just over 5 million viewers per episode.

Sophia's upcoming appearance later this season has sparked interest among some fans who had previously given up on the show, reports the Mirror.

"I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy since season 14 so ima need somebody to do a recap video so I don't physically have to watch it all," one individual expressed on X (formerly Twitter).

"This would make me start watching again," another fan declared.

A third ex-fan confessed: "okay maybe it's time to start watching greys again."

"I'm gonna need someone to tell me what's happened during the last 21 seasons of Grey's Anatomy so I can start watching to support our girl," a fourth chimed in.

The announcement of Bush joining the cast has sparked discussions within the devoted fanbase, with some expressing dismay at the addition of another high-profile star shortly after Mika and Levi's departure.

One puzzled fan questioned on Reddit: "They can't afford Jake Borelli and Midori Francis but can afford Sophia Bush? How?"

Another commented with scepticism: "The show can't even write for the characters they have lol weren't there supposed to be budget cuts?"

Viewers are left in suspense about how naturally Sophia's character, Dr. Cass Beckman, will assimilate into the dynamic at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

While scarce details have been provided regarding her storyline, Deadline characterises her as "amiable, fun and a little messy around the edges" and identifies her as a trauma surgeon working at Seattle Presbyterian.

Cass has a marriage tie to the show's main institution with her husband David Beckman, who operates as a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan; he remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, expected to play a smaller role, with no word yet on the actor taking up the mantle.

Audiences will meet Dr. Beckman for the first time in season 21's episode six, scheduled to broadcast on Thursday, November 7.

Grey’s Anatomy season 21 continues Thursdays on ABC in the US and is available to stream on Disney+.
