Richard Madeley shrugged off an embarrassing faux pas on Good Morning Britain with a lighthearted comment, admitting "it's live television, these things happen" after he suffered a slip of the tongue during the broadcast.

On Tuesday's programme, which he co-hosted alongside Susanna Reid, Madeley owned up to a gaffe that had viewers in stitches, having accidentally substituted 'Peters' for a less suitable word while referring to his co-star Andi Peters.

While discussing the incident with Susanna and guests Andrew Pierce and Kevin Maguire, Richard quizzically asked: "I have to ask you. Did you spot my inadvertent slip of the tongue? About an hour ago when I was introducing Andi Peters? I didn't spot it!"

Susanna didn't miss a beat, replying with an immediate "I did," followed by Madeley's confirmation: "She did."

Richard quickly found himself apologising again after addressing Susanna as 'she', rapidly correcting to her proper name, reports the Mirror.

With his characteristic wit, Richard continued: "Well if you missed it, it's online now! I called Andi Peters as Andi with another word that starts with P and ends with an S," prompting laughter as Kevin playfully suggested he repeat the mistake.

Maintaining his composure, Richard confessed, "I really didn't know I said it," but said: "It's live television, these things can happen!" Susanna promptly concluded the banter as they moved on to lighter topics like Barney the dinosaur, before swinging back to the day's political discourse.

The incident took place just as Madeley marked his return to the ITV morning show.

Fans were thrilled to have him back. One shared: "So lovely to see Richard back this week with Susanna first time in weeks. @richardm56 and @susannareid100 welcome back Richard." Echoing these sentiments, another added: "So happy to see the best dream team back Richard and Susanna @susannareid100 and @richardm56."

Meanwhile, Richard is glad to be on Good Morning Britain. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "I am very happy to stay on GMB as long as they want me. At some point I'm going to be too bloody old - I'm 68! At some stage either I will think or ITV will think maybe the time's come. But hopefully that will be for a few years yet, because I don't feel 68.

"I wouldn't get up at four in the f****** morning two weeks out of four, Monday to Thursday, if I didn't enjoy it. I don't need to do it. My career arch as it were, is behind me."

*Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV1 and ITX.
