Escape to the Country couple reveal reason house isn't for them

In the latest episode of BBC's popular series Escape to the Country, Steve Brown helped a couple look for the ideal home in Cornwall, only for them to identify a significant drawback.

On Friday's programme (October 11), the duo expressed their discomfort with their current residence beside a busy road, which left them feeling rather 'miserable'.

Michael, a graphic designer, and wife Jackie, library assistant, had dreams of relocating to England's idyllic south-westerly corner after numerous cherished family vacations there.

Having first crossed paths in an art studio over four decades ago, the pair now aimed to scale down from their current home Hertfordshire, since their three children have moved out.

They had a budget of £750,000 for a property that had at least three bedrooms to welcome their family, a capacious kitchen for gatherings, studio space for Jackie's artistic pursuits, and a garage to accommodate Michael.

Michael voiced the motivation behind their desired move to Cornwall: "We no longer need to be commuting into London every day and we no longer need good schools so now this is our time for us to have what we want rather than what the family needs," reports Wales Online.

Jackie elaborated on the appeal of Cornwall, stating: "It has a strong community and lots of galleries that we enjoy. We are both big walkers and we love being outdoors so it seemed like the ideal place to be."

Steve arranged several property viewings, ensuring they met the couple's requirements. However, one house posed a significant issue despite catching their eye.

The TV presenter introduced the pair to a Georgian residence in Roscroggan, complete with a lengthy driveway. Constructed in 1820 from granite and topped with a slate roof, the home boasted a luminous triple aspect kitchen, impressive period features, and an abundance of grandeur.

Additionally, the property included half an acre of garden space and planning permission for a double garage with an overhead studio. Priced under-budget at £700,000, the couple quickly realised the house was situated next to a bustling road - a factor they were unwilling to overlook.

Despite their affection for the property, the couple ultimately chose not to place an offer on it or any other houses they viewed during their appearance on the show. Thus, their quest for their dream home persists.

Escape to the Country airs on BBC One and iPlayer
