The One Show: Alison Steadman on Gavin and Stacey filming wrap

Gavin and Stacey star Alison Steadman has opened up about her sense of 'dread' following the conclusion of filming for the beloved BBC sitcom.

The much-loved series is set to delight fans with a final Christmas special later this year, seeing Ruth Jones and James Corden, among others, saying their last goodbyes to their cherished characters. Eager viewers are on tenterhooks for the finale, though details of the concluding episode remain under wraps.

As production came to a close, Alison reminisced about her journey on the show, revealing that she was moved to tears during the last takes.

Reflecting on the emotional farewell, she said: "We've had a great five weeks. We only finished on Monday night but we were all dreading that final scene when we finished. 90% of us were in tears. Some people braved it but it's been so fantastic."

Celebrating the end of an era, she added: "We had a wrap party. It was very nice, it was lovely. We'll just miss not filming it anymore. It was fabulous."

Alison didn't hold back in lauding James and Ruth - who bring Smithy and Nessa to life - for their "witty" writing, as she recounted how she was instantly captivated by the script and eager to join the cast, reports Wales Online.

"James and Ruth together, they are amazing, their scripts. So witty and funny! When I read the first scene, I was like, I've got to do this. I couldn't wait. I was going through the script and they didn't let me down!" she added.

In Dinas Powys, the real-life setting for Pam and Mick's Essex abode, James took a moment to express his gratitude to the fans as the shooting wrapped up.

He expressed his gratitude, saying: "Today is our last day in 'Essex'. Everyone in Dinas Powys has been so great to the show so thank you very, very much. It means more to us than you will ever know and we hope that you like the show."

Ruth conveyed her thanks as well, adding: "Thanks so much for being such dedicated fans and for being here every day and watching us even though we were there hid in the house. We hope that you will enjoy our little episode on Christmas Day."

The BBC's official Twitter handle confirmed the conclusion of Gavin and Stacey's filming earlier this week. Accompanying a snapshot of the clapperboard, their message read: "And that's a wrap... for the last time ever. See you on Christmas Day! #GavinAndStacey."
