Brian Cox weighs in on winter fuel allowance debate

Brian Cox bashed Keir Starmer and the Labour government this morning as he said that cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance will be a 'problem' for the Prime Minister. Appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain, the 78-year-old actor shared his thoughts on how the country is currently being run with presenters Ed Balls and Susanna Reid.

He said: "I think the problem is this winter allowance thing with the elderly. I mean, I just think that is a bad motion."

Brian continued: "I mean I do think he's inherited an impossible position from the Tories, there's no question about that."

Susanna put "another view" forward to the legendary actor, saying: "With all due respect, you probably don't need the Winter Fuel Allowance?" He replied: "No, I don't need it. But there are other people who do need it!"

The GMB host continued with backing the Labour government, saying: "Their argument is a universal benefit goes to lots of people who can afford to pay their own energy bills."

But Brian was not backing down as he said it came down to the "principle" of it. He added: "I think the elderly deserve it, no matter what they've done, we've all paid our taxes. And the richer we are the more tax we pay."

Referring to former Prime Minister Clement Attlee, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951, Ed asked what he would have thought.

Brian got in a dig at recent claims about Keir as he said: "I don't think Clement Attlee would have liked this move at all. Clement Attlee drove himself everywhere. Clement Attlee was the most extraordinary man.

"He wouldn't have needed, you know, freebies for his clothes or anything like that. That would not have happened."

It comes as Sir Keir has faced criticism for taking luxury gifts, including thousands of pounds worth of football and concert tickets for Taylor Swift.

Most recently it was revealed that he was given clothes valued at £16,000 from wealthy Labour peer Waheed Alli - which the Prime Minister declared as a donation to his private office.
