Alan Titchmarsh may well be the nation’s top gardening expert, and his designs exhibited on ITV’s Love Your Garden still inspire people to this day.

However, in all of his years of horticultural design, there’s one essential detail he seemingly tends to leave out – much to his wife’s disapproval.

He told Jane Horrocks and Ester Coles on their Queen Bees podcast how his wife sarcastically reminds him that she does all the laundry in their house, quipping: “My wife tells me that the fairies washed all the clothes again.”

And it’s perhaps because of her domestic role that Alan’s wife Alison often tells him off about his garden layouts: “I get it in the neck from my wife.

"When we designed gardens on Love Your Garden, we’d do these wonderful gardens and she’d say, ‘Excuse me, where’s the rotary dryer?”

Many UK homes don’t have the room for a full-length clothes line, and rotary dryers are a great space-saving solution in smaller gardens.

In a recent survey, Nearly eight in 10 people who were asked said they believe drying clothes indoors could cause health issues.

Alan says that whenever Alison asks, he has to remind her that he’d made a hole for the device in the garden, but he didn’t actually install the dryer pole until after filming was complete.

He adds that, for people who are starting from scratch with a new garden, but don’t have the benefit of Alan and his team coming to do all the hard work for them, there’s one key tip that can save a lot of heartache further down the line.

Alan explains: “It’s such an obvious thing to say,…but the thing to do is to go and look at the gardens that are nearest to you. People will be keen gardeners in the same street, or a street away. Look what grows well in their gardens.

“It’s not just down to them being good gardeners. Some of it will be, obviously, but it’s also what suits that area.

“If you spend all your time trying to get rhododendrons and camellias to grow, and there aren’t any in your area, the chance are it’s chalky soil and they don’t grow there.”

Alan is appearing on Love Your Weekend this morning at 9.30am on ITV.
