Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May said an emotional goodbye in the final ever The Grand Tour episode today, bringing 22 years of working together to a close.

Since Top Gear on the BBC in 2001 the trio have amassed a huge and loyal audience for their brand of motoring buffoonery but today the three had fans in tears as they put out their last ever episode working together.

The Grand Tour: One For The Road is the last time the trio will ever be on screen after 22 years, as Clarkson turns his attention to Clarkson's Farm full time and the trio stop making new car specials for Amazon Prime Video.

The finale took in a 1,200 mile drive across the sumptuous sights of Zimbabwe before the trio decided to switch gear and cross the border to where the trio filmed their first full Top Gear special 17 years ago in neighbouring Botswana - coming full circle on a long and eventful journey.

The show put up scenes of the three returning to the same baobab tree that they ended the first Top Gear special at, flashing scenes of the trio 17 years ago and now.

Fans were not ready for the emotional ending.

After the episode, James May tweeted: “It’s out. We’re off. Thank you for watching. You helped keep me off the streets.”

@unquietscotsman said: “No thank you, to all of you. I don’t have many good memories growing up as a kid, but I always remember watching TopGear as one of my escapisms from reality. It’s sad to see this journey come to its conclusion, but glad I was around to watch.”
