The popular ITV drama Grace has made a comeback with none other than John Simm reprising his role as the troubled DS Roy Grace for season four. The gripping series is based on the internationally bestselling Detective Superintendent Roy Grace books by Peter James.

But as the second episode of the fourth series got underway, viewers were left accusing the drama of straying too far away from the book's original plot.

The latest instalment of Grace aired on Sunday (September 8) and opened with a character found in a nun's habit and restrained to a metal railing on Brighton Beach.

A locksmith tried to help before casually walking away after realising he wouldn't get paid for his work.

Meanwhile, on Wooding Beacon, there was a tragedy as a park ranger discovered a dead body had been dumped on the hills.

When DS Roy arrived at the scene with DS Glen Branson (Richie Campbell), they immediately pointed out the condition of the corpse and predicted the victim had died by drowning.

Following the pathology tests, it was revealed the man's death was caused by very peculiar circumstances - he had drowned in sheep's milk.

The revelation set the tone for a mysterious and thrilling episode of the ITV drama.

But Grace viewers wasted no time taking to social media to accuse the show of floating too far away from the novel's original plot, with fan writing on X: "This one’s totally different to the book, isn’t it? John Simm said it was but… #WantYouDead #Grace."

While a second added: "This isn't #WantYouDead. Totally different plot. #Grace #PeterJames."

A third chimed in: "This is an absolute mess. There is artistic licence to make a TV drama but this has no correlation to the book! #Grace."

"I wonder why they totally change the plot. #Grace", added another.

However, some viewers loved the episode and shared flurries of praise with one person adding: "This is amazing #Grace."

"The best thing on a Sunday night #grace", added one fan while another chimed in: "Sunday night watching #Grace snuggled under my blanket with the smelly stupid price candle lit #bliss #autumnvibes."

Grace currently airs every Sunday on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm
