BBC Breakfast: Lili Myers chats about husband Dave

Dave Myers' widow Lili has revealed the heartbreaking way she is marking what would have been his 67th birthday.

The Hairy Bikers star passed away in February after being diagnosed with cancer and would have marked his 67th birthday on Sunday (September 8). To mark his birthday, his wife Lili is adamant she wants to spend the day doing something positive.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, she said: "Dave was a very kind person and a very warm generous person. This month, on the 8th, is Dave's birthday. So I wanted to mark that with something special. I want people to be generous to each other, I want people to be more warm to the world. Whether they're donating to charity, or giving a book to somebody, or talk to somebody in need."

Lili is currently in The Alps spending Dave's birthday on a motorbike trip, exactly as she said he would have wanted. She is raising money for children's charities and encouraging other people to share their kindness this weekend to help make someone smile.

She also thanked people for rallying around her after Dave's death and participating in a special Dave's Day to commemorate her husband's incredible life, as she opened up about what an effect he had on people.

Speaking about the day, she added: "I just thought I had this magical, beautiful community that was really with me. It helped a lot. Some people started cooking by watching the boys on TV."

Approximately 20,000 people celebrated 'Dave Day' across the UK in his memory, with the process from London to Barrow-in-Furness led by Lili and Dave's co-star and best friend Si King. Speaking during the event, she said: "Dave was always a Barrovian through and through. He wanted to put Barrow on the map and from beyond the grave, he has done it."

Lili feels her husband's presence everywhere, explaining during a chat on Lorraine that he is always with her.

"Everybody who loses somebody in their lives misses them but there's a different layer because if I turn on the TV, he might be on. There are cookbooks in the house everywhere. He is everywhere. It just transpires and rolls on into this beautiful thing," she said.

Si issued a statement earlier this year to announce Dave's sad passing, admitting he would "miss him every day".

He said: "I'm afraid I bear some sad news. Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years. Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave's wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home. All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing.

"His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own. Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can't follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god's speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya."

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One.
