Good Morning Britain delivered a devastating blow to the UK this morning as the ITV show come to a halt to share some breaking news. They announced that energy bills are set to see a huge increase this autumn.

Households in Britain will face a winter energy price hike with regulator Ofgem announcing plans to raise the price cap. From October the average bill will rise by 10%, which is more than expected.

This equates to about a £150 rise for the average household and comes at a time when the Government is axing winter fuel payments for millions.

Newsreader Sean Fletcher explained that some families will "struggle to make ends meet", with annual bills thought to be costing around £1717 more per year. The financial comes after Ofgem originally lowered the cap back in April.

He then cut to a home in Liverpool as they showed the impact that the price increases will have across the UK. They showed a woman, named woman, sat in her living room with a halogen heater on as she sat in her dressing gown.

Newsreader Ciara Durkin explained: "It's news that households like Linda do not want to be waking up to this morning." She went on to add that pensioners will be among those most impacted by the changes, as they are no longer getting Pension Credit.

But as the Good Morning Britain team provided the update, fans at home were outraged by Linda in Liverpool having her heating on in the middle of summer. Some viewers took to social media to accuse the ITV show of "scaremongering".

Posting on X/Twitter, one user wrote: " The way they’ve got Linda from Liverpool in her living room wearing her dressing gown and pjs with her electric fire on in the middle of August for dramatic effect. Stop scare mongering #GMB."

Another added: "Someone tell Linda that it costs more to run the halogen heater than it does the central heating #GMB." A third asked: " Why is this woman heating her house, it's hardly freezing. #GMB".

"It’s not cold, why’s she got the heating on?! #gmb #GoodMorningBritain," someone else complained. Another wrote: " Just paid my lowest gas/electric bill of the year..why is her heating on ? #gmb".

The regulator sets the price limit based on factors including wholesale energy prices - the amount energy firms pay for gas and electricity before supplying it to households. It is updated every three months.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
