Paddy McGuinness discovers family birth certificate error

Fans of the BBC show Who Do You Think You Are? were quick to point out Paddy McGuinness' repetitive habit as he came across his family history.

The hit historical show made for compelling viewing on Thursday night (August 22) as presenter Paddy discovered more about his roots and where his family derived from. Revealing to viewers at home that he didn't know much about his grandparents, Paddy was gobsmacked when he was provided further insight.

But fans were quick to notice that Paddy continually used the word "mindblowing" and often said he was "mindblown" when he uncovered more about the past.

Heading straight over to X formerly known as Twitter, fans of the show were quick to point it out. One viewer said: "Mind-blowing amount of mind-blowing in this episode."

Another said: "Paddy’s mind is really being blown tonight." A third added: "Everything is mind-blowing to Paddy," followed by a laughing face emoji.

During the show, Paddy, who was born and bred in Bolton, was stunned to discover more about his grandparents.

The TV star also discovered an error on his great grandfather, Paddy Leonard's, birth certificate. As he looked at the paper in front of him, he noticed his great-grandparent's surnames were spelled incorrectly.

"Spelling mistakes are quite common as we go back through the records," the expert told Paddy before adding: "And that is because they spell it how they hear it."

"That is mind-blowing," Paddy said in shock.

Later in the programme, Paddy was eager to trace his Irish heritage, discovering it didn't originate from his grandfather, William.

By the show's conclusion, the TV host found a baptism certificate for his great-grandmother Bridget, revealing she was baptized in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland.

He was also shocked to find out that his grandfather on his father's side William McGuinness served in the Boer War.

After hearing this aspect of Paddy's family history, fans headed back over to X to comment. One viewer said: "Watching @PaddyMcGuinness on #WhoDoYouThinkYouAre.

"My grandad, born in 1883, also fought in the Boer War in the Royal Lancashire regiment. And then all through WWI. My mum said he was cold & hard. Probably PTSD from seeing such horrors."

While another shared: "Paddy McGuinness's GRANDAD was in the Boer War?! I really can't get over that."

Who Do You Think You Are is available to watch on BBC IPlayer.
